Life is like a box of chalk

Sidewalks come alive during Chalk of the Town

by Tracy Key

Last year, monsters, aliens, messages of peace and love, wild animals, popular video game characters and even a unique “Dragephunt” filled the sidewalks of Old Town with bright colors and diverse styles. This year, there’s no telling what creatures and scenes will transform the streets from a city block into an open art gallery at the fourth annual Chalk of the Town.

On Saturday, experienced artists, children and everyone in between plan to cover the sidewalks in chalk drawings while participating in part of the Be a Tourist in Your Own Town event.

“It’s a family-friendly event that brings live art to the public,” explained Danielle Cooke, communications director for the Old Town Commercial Association. Competitors’ creations will be evaluated by a jury of judges that will view each piece individually. First and second place will receive “festival packages,” including Old Town t-shirts, posters and festival tickets.

The drawing process begins at 10 a.m. and all creations must be completed by 2 p.m., at which time the judging process begins.

Throughout the day, the public can also participate by filling out a ballet to vote for favorite works, which will be used to determine the People’s Choice award, which is announced at 3 p.m. along with the first and second place winners.

There will also be a special area of the sidewalk set aside for families and children attending the event to show off their skills and draw their own chalk creations.

“The streets are full, and you can get to know all the businesses while walking around in the open,” Cooke said.
