Council Night

Committee of the Whole scheduled to take up possible ballot proposals

by Andy Balaskovitz
Sunday, Nov. 27 — The Lansing City Council’s Committee of the Whole is scheduled to take up three issues Monday night that could lead to proposals appearing on Feb. 28 ballots.

The committee, made up of all eight Council members, is scheduled to discuss a City-Clerk supported City Charter amendment to reduce the number of yearly Council meetings; a mayor-backed proposal to sell the former Waverly Golf Course and adjacent Michigan Avenue Park; and another proposal to sell a building and parking lot in the 1st Ward formerly used by the Parks and Recreation Department.

City Clerk Chris Swope said that proposals need to be approved by Dec. 20 in order to appear on Feb. 28 presidential primary election ballots. Swope has also said Gov. Rick Snyder and Attorney General Bill Schuette need to approve the proposal for fewer Council meetings because it would amend the charter.

In order to appear on Feb. 28 ballots, a majority of the City Council must approve resolutions that include ballot language. For more on why Mayor Virg Bernero believes the proposal to sell Waverly Golf Course — an idea that has failed to make it through Council on three occasions since May — will pass this time, click here.

The Committee of the Whole is scheduled to meet immediately after the Council’s regular meeting at 7 p.m. Monday. On the Council’s agenda, six resolutions are up for approval, including special land use permits for two churches in the city and setting public hearings for Dec. 12 on two tax incentive packages for ELMET North America at its facilities near Interstate 96 and U.S. 127.
