MSU celebrates LGBT awareness

A week of Coming Out Day activities includes lectures, games and a dance

by Carlee Schepeler
Tuesday, Oct. 11 — Today marks the 24th
anniversary of the March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights, which led to
the establishment of the internationally recognized National Coming Out Day.

“A lot of times people in
the LBGT community are given messages that they should be ashamed, so National
Coming Out Week is about coming out and being proud,” said Lauren Spencer,
program coordinator at Michigan State University's Lesbian, Bisexual, Gay and Transgender Resource
Center.

MSU kicked off the
awareness week Monday as the Gay Christian Fellowship hosted a memorial for
Matthew Shepard, a University of Wyoming student who was murdered in 1998 after
being targeted because of his sexual orientation. The memorial also
commemorated “the death and sacrifice of thousands of LBGT people throughout
time simply for being what God gave them to be,” the Facebook event said.

Kris Renn, assistant professor of Higher, Adult, & Lifelong Education, presents the
lecture “Growing Up in the Age of Coming Out” at 8:30 p.m. tonight in Room B119
of Wells Hall. “Mom, I’m Gay,” a discussion on parents’ perspectives on coming
out, takes place at 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 13 in Room G30 of Landon Hall.

Other events throughout
the week include a “Do Ask, Do Tell” military-themed dance at 8 p.m. Friday,
Oct. 14, at Williams Great Hall, a Friday evening photo scavenger hunt and a
queer tailgate before Saturday’s football game against the University of
Michigan.
