Patty Duke speaks at Peckham

The actress will discuss dealing with bi-polar disorder

by City Pulse Staff
Monday, Oct. 10 — Oscar-winning actress Patty Duke shares her story of living with bi-polar disorder Wednesday as part of the Peckham Community Partnership Foundation Speaker Series. Duke speaks at 10:30 a.m. and 2 p.m.
The Speakers Series focuses on issues impacting the disability community. “We are looking forward to hearing her address the stigmas associated with this disability and increase awareness for proper diagnosis, treatment and acceptance,” said Scott Derthick, vice president of human resources.
In 1962, Duke won an Academy Award for best supporting actress in the role of Helen Keller in “The Miracle Worker” and was the youngest person to win in a competitive category during that time. She had previously portrayed Keller on Broadway during the drama’s two-year run.
In 1963, she starred in TV’s long-running comedy, “The Patty Duke Show,” playing both Brooklyn native Patty Lane and her cultured cousin from Scotland, Cathy Lane. Duke also recorded hit songs and starred in the 1967 drama “Valley of the Dolls.”
Despite her success, Duke was engaged in the throes of bi-polar disorder, experiencing extreme periods of euphoria, paralyzing depression and panic attacks. At 35, she was properly diagnosed; she shared her story in her first book, “Call Me Anna.”
Duke continues to travel the country, speaking about personal growth and the challenges of living with manic depression. An interview with Duke will be in this week’s print edition of City Pulse.
