One World One Future hosts an evening to raise awareness of the costs of human trafficking

by Carlee Schepeler

Thursday, Sept. 29 — Demi Moore, Ashton
Kutcher, Bradley Cooper and Mira Sorvino have all spoken out against it; now,
you can help do something about it. A fundraiser to benefit victims of human
trafficking takes place from 7:30 to 10 p.m. Friday at the Radisson Hotel in
downtown Lansing.

One World One Future is
hosting the second annual event, which is designed to raise awareness of
trafficking around the world, nationwide and statewide. Katie LaRoche,
president of the organization and Miss Michigan 2010, will welcome former NFL star
T.J. Duckett and Detroit Lions quarterback Drew Stanton.

“The public has been
starting to become aware of the issue,” LaRoche said in a phone interview.
“There’s been an astronomical shift in the last few years. It’s exploded as far
as activists and celebrities supporting it and bringing awareness.”

Brigitte Cazalis-Collins,
director of the Friends of Maiti Nepal organization, is scheduled to speak, and
the band Sargent Avenue will perform; the industrial rock band played at the
MTV End Exploitation and Trafficking (EXIT) festival in Thailand in June. The
event also includes a silent auction of items donated by local businesses.

Proceeds benefit Friends
of Maiti Nepal, which has been working to fund a shelter that will rescue girls
from human traffickers. “Nepal is one of the poorest nations in the world,”
LaRoche said. “The girls — and the entire nation — are very vulnerable. The
money there goes a long way.”

An estimated 12,000
Nepalese girls were sold into brothels in India last year, and an estimated
325,000 children are exploited in the commercial sex industry in the U.S.
annually.

Tickets are $40 per person,
and can be purchased at oneworldonefuture.org.
