'Faces of Caring'

Local photographer gives portrait sittings in exchange for donations to help drought-stricken families in the Horn of Africa

by Christina Strong

Friday,
Aug. 5
— Local photographer Michael McPeak is giving back to those in the
community who also give back. On
Saturday, he’ll offer portrait sittings to people that donate to
Save the Children for the Horn of Africa Drought Relief.

McPeak is calling the project “Faces of
Caring.” The event begins at 1 p.m. with a reception in the North Foyer Gallery
of East Lansing Public Library.

“I became aware of what was going on in the Horn of Africa, and when I
talked to friends who are experts in charitable organizations they strongly
recommended Save the Children — and I’m a parent,” McPeak said.

This is the second time he has used portrait
sittings to raise money. The first time, he raised $1,300 for the Red Cross Tsunami
relief effort in Japan.

McPeak
said donations of $100 are encouraged but he understands if less is given.

There is
no maximum number of people who will be allowed portrait sittings for
donations, McPeak said.

McPeak works
locally with three galleries: Saper Galleries, Absolute Gallery and The Lansing
Art Gallery. He features his images on the walls of the Old Town Medical Arts
Building in a display called The McPeak Healing Gallery, and he currently has photography on display at
the East Lansing Public Library.
