Lawrence M. Glazer's "Wounded Warrior: The Rise and Fall of Michigan Governor John Swainson" has already won a Michigan Notable Book Award; now, the biography has been awarded an Independent Publisher Book Award.

Glazer, a  former Michigan Circuit Court judge spent four years researching and writing his book, which was published last year by the Michigan State University Press. It profiles the controversial Swainson, a World War II veteran who lost both his legs in a land mine explosion during combat. Swainson served in the State Senate, became governor in 1960 and was elected to the Michigan Supreme Court 10 years later. Swainson resigned from the court in 1975, after being convicted of perjury. After being disbarred, Swainson fell into depression and alcoholism. Glazer always suspected Swainson was wrongfully convicted.

“This year, we saw spectacular work in so many
categories," said
Independent Publisher awards director Jim Barnes in a press statement, "so much creativity — so much truth. The main thing I’ve learned about
independent publishers and authors over the years is that they tell the truth. We judged passionately truthful memoirs
and biographies, soulfully truthful self-help books and brutally honest
critiques of our social and political systems.”

The award was announced Monday at the annual Book Expo America convention in New York.
