A quintet of Common Ground additions

'80s rock from Rick Springfield, Southern-fried favorites from Charlie Daniels Band

by City Pulse Staff

If you need to know the latest act booked at Common Ground Music Festival, don't talk to strangers and don't bother texting Jessie's girl: Rick Springfield has been dated for July 12 at the annual downtown festival.

He'll be joined on the same day by Burton Cummings, the former Guess Who vocalist who went solo in the late 1970s and hit it big with "Stand Tall." Cummings is also up on July 12.

The following day, festival fans will get a heaping helping of Southern-fried rock, courtesy of the Charlie Daniels Band. The venerable band responsible for "The Devil Went Down to Georgia," "The South's Gonna Do It Again" and "In America" performs the same day as Aaron Lewis of Staind, who collaborated with Daniels on his song "Country Boy" on Lewis' new CD, "Town Line."

Another band with Southern influences, Black Stone Cherry, joins the lineup July 15, to promote its latest CD "Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea"; the first single, "White Trash Millionaire," was released in March.

The 12th annual festival runs from July 11 to 17. Single-day Common Ground
tickets — priced at $30 for July 11 and $29 for July 12, 13, 14, 15, 16 and 17 — are on sale at
StarTickets outlets, at the festival office at 901 N. Washington Ave.,
or by calling (800) 585-3737. A seven-day ticket is $79.

Previously
announced performers include Melissa Etheridge (July 17), Theory of a Dead Man (July 15), Trey Songz, winner of BET’s 2010 best male
R&B artist (July 11) and rock and Roll Hall of Fame
inductees Lynyrd Skynyrd (July 14).
