Setting dates and a budget update

Lansing City Council to schedule two public hearings tonight, and the administration plans to give a budget update in Committee of the Whole

by Andy Balaskovitz
Monday, March 21 — The Lansing City Council has a thin agenda planned for tonight, but following the meeting, an administration representative is scheduled to give a budget update.

First, the Council is scheduled to set April 25 as a public hearing date on a request for a waiver of the noise ordinance by the state Department of Transportation. The department is planning surface upgrades on Cedar and Larch streets in north Lansing from April through November. The department is requesting that the noise ordinance be waived because construction is slated to take place between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. to “reduce the traffic congestion and increase worker safety.”

The Council is also scheduled to vote on setting a public hearing for March 28 to consider applying for a Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund grant. The $600,000 grant would go towards improvements at Grand River Park, including a non-motorized path within the park and a fishing pier. The park is on the north side of the Grand River between Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Waverly Road.

The Parks Board unanimously supported the application at its March 10 meeting.

Following the Council meeting, the Committee of the Whole is scheduled to hear a budget update from the administration. Mayor Virg Bernero is scheduled to present his proposed budget at the March 28 meeting.

Finance Director Jerry Ambrose has said that a worst-case-scenario budget — meaning if the city loses about $6 million in revenue sharing from the state and a 4-mill property tax increase fails in a May election — means the city could close up to three fire stations and lay off 120 police and fire employees.
