Honors for WKAR

TV and radio episodes win awards from the Michigan Association of Broadcasters

by Yang Zhang

Wednesday, March 16 — WKAR TV and radio recently received four awards from the Michigan Association of Broadcasters at the 2010 Michigan Broadcasting Awards at Lansing Center.

Three WKAR-TV series — “QuizBusters,” “Off the Record” and “Backstage Pass: Jen Sygit & Spare Change” — won the Best Special Interest and Cultural Programming 2010, the Best News or Public Affairs Special and the Best Cultural and Performing Arts 2010, respectively.

“We are very pleased and honored to be recognized for our efforts by our peers in the media,” said WKAR-TV executive director Tim Zeko.

Zeko said “Off the Record,” in its 40th year, and “QuizBusters,” in its 22nd season, are the two of the station’s longest running local series and have received the Broadcast Excellence Awards previously. “BackStage Pass” is distributed nationally and is in its second year.

“QuizBusters” is broadcast Saturdays at 6 p.m., “Off the Record” is seen Fridays at 8:30 p.m. and “BackStage Pass” airs at 10 p.m. Thursdays.

In addition, WKAR-Radio was honored with the Best Hard News and Current Events Story for “Counting In the Counted Out” by Kevin Lavery. The story, which aired in January 2010, was about Volunteers of America searching the streets for Lansing’s homeless people in order to provide them shelters in the middle of a cold winter night.

Lavery has worked at the WKAR radio for more than four years and previously won MAB awards in 2007 and 2009. “I am lucky and blessed to win the third one,” he said.
