With the passage of the moratorium, don’t look for any new dispensaries opening up within the next six months. But with about 20 to choose from and dozens more in the works, it shouldn’t be hard to find the meds you need in the meantime.

Medical Marijuana Services, a collection of six businesses that occupies the old A&E Printing building on East Street, is one the shops able to continue operation during the moratorium. MMS helps patients get legal and offers raw medical marijuana with no membership required. A line of medibles is forthcoming.

They offer a variety of popular and potent strains, ranging in price from $10 to $25 per gram. At $15 per gram, the Calazar A and B strains and the Super Lemon Haze were all good deals and effective meds. The Calazar A is a sativa-heavy strain, while the B is just the opposite — indica-dominant. In other words, A’s an upper and B’s a downer. Similar in look with light green, fluffy nugs, the B smelled a little sweeter and was a bit harsher on the lungs. The highs were noticeably different from these two strains. The effects of A were more heady and thought-filled than the sedative, mellow high of the B.

The Super Lemon Haze offered at MMS is one of the better varieties of this strain offered around town. A strong lemony aroma and taste with with an intense sativa/indica hybrid high have made this strain world renowned. Smoke a little and be good to go, smoke a little more and just be, well, gone.

At $20 per gram, Grape Krush looked as good as it tasted. The lime-colored buds were coated with sugary trichomes and smelled like candy. Ground up, the grape smell was profound, and the taste was just as fruity. Being an indica-dominant hybrid, the Grape Krush produces a blend of the head/body buzz combo, relaxing on the body, but not so sedative you get locked to the couch. The Alaskan Thunderfuck was overpriced at $25 per gram, though at $10 per gram, the AK-47 seemed under priced, but looked and smelled like a deal.

It’s great to see dispensaries popping up outside of Michigan Avenue’s green district with accessible hours of operation and a good variety of quality product and prices. And, with the moratorium bringing the boom of competition to a halt, MMS has the room and potential to grow into one of Lansing’s top shelf med shops.
