Lansing Civic Players on hiatus

'Strategic growth, collaboration and reorganization plan' announced

by City Pulse Staff

(Friday, Nov. 12) Earlier this week, Lansing Civic Players scrapped plans to stage "Mrs. Warren's Profession," the George Bernard Shaw comedy that replaced "A Shot in the Dark" on the company's schedule. Now comes word LCP won't be putting on any shows for the rest of the year.

"Lansing’s longest running amateur theater group is launching a strategic growth, collaboration and reorganization plan to ensure its long-term sustainability and success," reads a press release issued Friday morning from LCP board president Bob Metzger. The plan begins with an "evaluation phase" that's scheduled to last through February; the theater plans to hold focus groups "to provide input and feedback on long-term opportunities for the theater space and the role LCP can play in mid-Michigan as a theater and creative asset."

The theater has experienced a bumpy year. A planned staging of "Misery"
was canceled when LCP lost the rights after a Broadway production was
announced. An original musical titled "North Star, May I Help You?
Santa's Call Center" was announced to open in December, but will not go
into production. The costume shop will continue to operate while the stage is dark, according to the press statement, and fund-raising activities will continue.

On the theater's agenda: recruitment of a business board of directors, an artistic advisory council and committee volunteers"; a close look at current processes and systems; and the structuring of a long-term strategy for operations. Metzger and LCP artistic director Tony Sump both serve as unpaid volunteers; board and committee members will also work on a voluntary basis.
