Silver celebration

Women in the Arts festival turns 25

by Meghan Spork
The 25th annual Women in the Arts Festival honors women in the region
who are artists, musicians, and poets. The festival takes place this
weekend at Edgewood United Church in East Lansing.

WITA is a volunteer
organization. “Our goal is to provide an opportunity for women artists
to show their work and have a place and opportunity to perform, and that
is what we do,” said Diane Wilson, chairwoman of the organizing
committee.

WITA includes an
artists’ market, featuring over 30 booths of art created and inspired by
women. The market runs from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Friday and from
11 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Saturday.

During the day on
Saturday, performances range from a lesbian oral history to poetry and
music.

Evening concerts wrap up the festival both nights in Edgewood
United Church’s sanctuary. Friday’s performers include C.A.T., a fusion
of three Michigan-based musicians. Spoken-word artist Allie Merrick will
follow the musicians’ set.

The Saturday night concert features
singer-songwriter Pamela Means and the Lansing-based women’s folk-rock group Sometimes Y. Silent auctions will be held before the evening concerts Friday and Saturday.

Two workshops will be offered Saturday.

At 1 p.m., Rosanna Barberio, owner of Old Town Pilates, will teach a class for beginners to introduce the art of pilates.

"Are You Waiting For
Your Life to Start?," the 3 p.m. workshop taught by Heather Spotts,
delves into the idea of living life to its fullest at the present
moment.
