A new kind of class struggle

It’s professor vs. student in topical drama ’Third’

by Amie Montemurro
There’s a meeting of the minds going on in a college classroom, as a liberal, middleaged professor squares off against a conservative, twentysomething student.

Laurie Jameson (Heather Lewis) is an academic with high principles; Woodson Bull III (Spencer Smith) — call him Third, for short — is the scion of a wealthy family. When Third turns in a shockingly wellwritten essay on Shakespeare’s "King Lear," Laurie refuses to believe it’s a piece of original work. She accuses him of plagiarism.

"Third" was the final play written by Wendy Wasserstein before she died from lymphoma in 2006. The drama, which Peppermint Creek Theatre Co. will present beginning Thursday, April 22, premiered in 2005.

"Third" is directed by Peppermint Creek’s artistic director Chad Badgero, and also stars Sara Blossom, Rachel Kabodian and Mark Zussman.

On the opening night of every show, Peppermint Creek facilitates a “talkback,” which often includes a discussion of the show and questions about rehearsals, the production process, etc.

This program has been so successful the company has expanded the idea.

Peppermint Creek’s "First Look" program brings participants into the production process at three different points: the first meeting of cast and crew, a rehearsal, and opening night.

“The 11 participants have had great things to say," Badgero said, "and I think our mission to give them a more full experience with the show is happening.”
