JAZZ FEST

Schedule

by Lawrence Cosentino
It’s harvest time in the heart of Michigan. Who cares if the corn, cukes and tomatoes aren’t quite ready? The bebops, shishkapows and voo-voos are falling off the vine and running with juice.

This year’s Lansing JazzFest showcases the staggering bounty of Lansing’s, and Michigan’s, jazz scene. The two biggest guns have deep ties to the Capital City. Funky R&B crowd-pleaser Tim Cunningham was born and raised in Lansing. World-renowned bassist and Professor of Jazz Rodney Whitaker made his home here a decade ago. The Gypsy caravan Hot Club of Detroit and straightahead trumpeter John Douglas are fixtures of the Motor City.

And on it goes, from Lansing’s organissimo to a superband of local high school students led by alto saxman Wessell Anderson.

With harvest comes Thanksgiving, and this year’s festival shows that local jazz fans have a lot to be thankful for.
