Eyesore of the week

by Drew Winter

Property: 506 S. Chestnut St., Lansing
Assessed: $40,200
Owner: Ingham County Treasurer
Taxpayer: Well … it’s in tax foreclosure
Owner says: Property will be auctioned, building demolished.

This house is in a state of real estate purgatory, but it looks like hell. Burned wood, olive siding, an overgrown lawn and matter board windows accentuate this gem.

The property has been derelict for over a year, said neighbor Chad Battle, a recent graduate of Cooley Law School. He said his home became infested with bats that came over from the abandoned house.

Ingham County Treasurer Eric Schertzing said that the buildingīs fire damage would require it to be demolished by any new owners. The property will be auctioned July 21 and, if unsuccessful, again in late August. If no one buys it then, it will be turned over to the Ingham County Land Bank, which will demolish the property. Schertzing said his office doesn’t have the authority to do anything with it right now since it’s in tax foreclosure.

"Itīs kind of like purgatory,” he said.

Thatīs probably how the neighbors feel.

“Eyesore of the Week," is our weekly look at some of the seedier properties in Lansing. Let us know about that blight in your neighborhood! If you have a suggestion, please e-mail eyesore@ lansingcitypulse.com or call Neal McNamara at 371-5600 ex. 17.
