Eyesore of the week

by Ben Joubert

Address: 2316 E. Michigan Ave., Lansing Owner: J and L Carr Inc.
Taxpayer: J and L Carr Inc.
Assessed: $63,000
Owner Says: Renovations are planned

Near the corner of Michigan and Foster avenues, a large branch covers half of an abandoned house that features a similarly abandoned attached storefront. Tarps cover parts of the roof and windows; a gutter hangs broken and twisted off the front. Around the back, an alley is filled with overgrown weeds, busted flowerpots and other debris.

The house is up for sale by J & L Carr Inc. and has been on the market for over two years.

“It’s just a really bad economy,” said Larry Carr, the owner. “I’m barely making enough to pay the mortgage.”

Even so, Carr plans on having renovations done to the front.

“We got some fun stuff planned to spiff the whole thing up,” Carr said.

Dave Holstrom, assistant manager at the Enterprise Rent-a-Car across the street, says he never noticed the house before.

“Frankly, I don’t think any of the houses here are the sweetest looking,” Holstrom said.
