One fest under a groove

George Clinton, Darius Rucker added to Common Ground

by City Pulse

Organizers announced today that George Clinton and Parliament- Funkadelic and Darius Rucker have been added to the 10th Annual Common Ground Festival.

Clinton was the man behind legendary funk collectives Parliament and Funkadelic in the 1970s and early ‘80s, before a record contract dispute pushed him to go “solo,” dropping the Parliament and Funkadelic names, but keeping his musicians.

In Parliament and Funkadelic, Clinton stretched the boundaries of funk and rock music with landmark albums, including “Mothership Connection,” “Maggot Brain” and “One Nation Under a Groove.” Over the years, he penned and performed such monstrous grooves as “Atomic Dogg,” “Bop Gun (One Nation)” and “Flashlight,” many of which found new ears in the ‘90s, as rappers and producers, like Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Ice Cube and Coolio generously borrowed beats from Clinton’s tunes to propel their rhymes.

In 1997, Clinton and 15 other members of Parliament-Funkadelic were inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Clinton and Co. will take the Pearle Vision stage on Tuesday, July 7, along with The Roots.

Rucker is probably best known as the baritone crooner at the forefront of his previous band, the Grammy-winning Hootie & The Blowfish, which churned out such top-40 staples as “Hold My Hand,” “Let Her Cry” and “Only Wanna Be With You” in the mid-‘90s. Rucker has recently found success as a country singer on the strength of 2008’s “Learn to Live,” featuring the hit single “Don’t Think I Don’t Think About It.” Rucker will play the Pearle Vision stage on Friday, July 10.
