Eyesore of the week

This week’s property is double trouble: it has apartments deemed unfit for living and a gas station with no gas. These two crumbling properties on the southwest corner of Capitol and Grand River avenues are decorated with motes of broken glass, gravel and weeds. Indeed, the cleanest accessories on the buildings are the padlocks.


SA Properties LLC purchased the property last February, but not much has changed since then.


"It’s always been a pain in the ass," said 23-year neighbor Carl Sevenski.

Sevenski said he spoke with the new owner, who told him he plans to overhaul the property within the next year, razing the gas station to make room for apartment parking. Sevenski, whose orderly and vibrant garden brushes up against the decomposing building, said renovation would be welcome but long overdue.

He said the property has been a breeding ground for prostitution and drug dealing.


"The neighbors all wish it’d be torn down but there’s nothing they can do about it," he said.


Owner Dale Schrader said that he bought the property to “help the community.” He owns an environmental cleanup business and in his spare time fixes up dilapidated properties.

“I do intend to fix it up,” he said. “And it’ll be nice when it’s done: it’ll have a tile roof and maybe terra cotta colors.”
