Pocketful of ’Kryptonite’

Common Ground adds 3 Doors Down

by City Pulse
We’re not saying yet whether we’ll still call you “Superman,” but if you’re a fan of modern rock stalwart 3 Doors Down, you might go crazy when we tell you the group will be in Lansing this summer to play the Common Ground music festival.

Festival organizers today announced the multi-platinum selling post-grunge band among the latest acts to join the lineup, along with Michigan’s own soulstress Bettye LaVette and local bluesman Harper.

Originally from Escatawpa, Miss., 3 Doors Down rose to prominence in the early 2000s, following in the footsteps of the earnest expression and moderate, but not too much, rocking blazed in the late ‘90s by bands like Matchbox 20 and Fuel. The group first broke through with “Kryptonite,” the Manof-Steel referencing hit that gave it a national audience, and went on to score six No. 1 hits and multiple Billboard awards en route to selling more than 13 million albums. The band also formed its own charity, The Better Life Foundation (named for its first album), in 2003 (the same year the band last played Common Ground), which has given more than $2 million to children’s charities. The band headlines Common Ground on July 12.

Bettye LaVette is a Michigan native who’s been releasing soul music for more than 40 years. She had her biggest hit with “My Man—He’s a Loving Man” in 1962 at age 16. LaVette will open for Los Lonely Boys on July 8.

A native Australian living in Michigan, blues musician Peter Harper melds the aboriginal sounds of his homeland with the blues, switching between the didgeridoo and his trademark blues harp. Harper will open for Los Lonely Boys on July 8.

Common Card seven-day passes are available for $85 until July 1, when they go up to $95. Individual, single-day general admission tickets for July 6–10 are available now. Single-day general admission tickets for July 12 go on sale 10 a.m. Friday, May 22. Single tickets for July 6-10 & 12 are $26 per day in advance until July 1, when they go up to $32.

Children 10 and younger get in free with a ticketed adult. Tickets are available at Star Tickets outlets, the Common Ground office in the Lansing City Market, 333 N. Cedar St., Lansing, www.commongroundfest.com and by calling 1 (800) 585-3737.
