Lansing Mayor Virg Bernero will announce his campaign to run for re-election Saturday afternoon at an event that will begin underneath the Shiawassee Street Bridge.
According to a press release available on the Web site www.votevirg.com, Bernero will run on his record over the past four years and make creating jobs a priority.
"We have charted a course of fiscal responsibility that has relied on making the tough choices necessary to live within our means," Bernero says in the release. "We have maintained our reserve funds despite efforts by some to fritter them away, and we have found innovative ways to save money by regionalizing key assets like the Potter Park Zoo."
Bernero had been somewhat guarded about his intention to keep the mayor’s seat. He recently said, “Yeah it’s a good guess, I’ll probably end up running,” when asked whether he would run this year.
Saturday’s event will begin at 1:30 on the east side of the Grand River behind the Lansing City Market.
Bernero’s entrance into the mayor’s race officially brings the slate of candidates to four. Other candidates include At-Large Councilwoman Carol Wood, local attorney and Lansing school board member Charles Ford and Ben Hassenger, a local musician.
