Cadillac Club deadlock

by
A Monday night City Council hearing that would determine the fate of the Cadillac Club’s liquor license lasted 12 hours and ended with a deadlocked 4-4 Council vote.

The final vote was over whether to recommend to the state Liquor Control Commission to not renew the Cadillac Club’s liquor license, but is considered null because there was no majority.

The Council, which was given an either/or choice of voting to recommend non-renewal or revocation, will again take up the issue at its Thursday meeting.

At-Large Councilwoman Carol Wood, First Ward Councilman Eric Hewitt, At-Large Councilman Brian Jeffries and Third Ward Councilwoman A’Lynne Robinson voted for the non-renewal. Council President Derrick Quinney, At-Large Councilwoman Kathie Dunbar, Fourth Ward Councilman Tim Kaltenbach and Second Ward Councilwoman Sandy Allen voted against the recommendation.

Monday’s hearing pitted Cadillac Club owner Dave Sheets and his attorney, mayoral candidate Charles Ford, against the Lansing Police Department. The Police Department claims that the Cadillac Club is a nuisance that has racked up more police reports than any other bar in the city.

Testimony during the hearing drew out police statistics that showed there had been 95 incidents at the Cadillac Club over six months. The next closest comparable bar was Club Xcel, with 50 incidents over the same time period (Rum Runner’s, Cascarelli’s and Spiral were the next highest).
