LSJ shrinks as it moves to new press

by City Pulse Staff

MONDAY, July 14 — The Lansing State Journal marked its move to a new press today by giving readers a smaller paper.

The first issue since the Journal closed its Delta Township plant is about 1.75 inches shorter and about a half-inch narrower than the one the day before.

The Journal moved its printing to Walker, a Grand Rapids suburb. The printer, Advance Central Services, also prints papers for MLive Media Group, one of the Journal’s biggest competitors. The move eliminated 27 full-time jobs and 76 part-time positions.

The move is the latest cost-cutting effort at the Journal. Ten positions were eliminated last year in the latest of a series of layoffs. Subscription rates have risen from $23 to $37 a month in the last two years. A paywall was created for the Journal’s website.

Efforts to reach the State Journal for comment were unsuccessful.
