Black History Month celebration at UAW hall

The UAW Local 602 Civil Rights Committee presents its 13th Annual Taste of Black History on Sunday, Feb. 1. Last year’s event drew a diverse crowd, including the mayor and other prominent community members, to celebrate and learn about black history and important contributions of African Americans. This year’s theme is “Our Season, Our Hour, The State Women in Power,” with guest speaker Rep. Artina Tinsley Hardman, 3rd District chairwoman of the Michigan Legislative Black Caucus.

Women’s involvement in government issues — such as voting, the fight for equality and civil rights — will be the key focus of the 3 p.m. presentation. The event will also include entertainment — a troupe of dancers will perform and vocalists will present the Black National Anthem – and food at the UAW Local 602 Union Hall, 2510 W. Michigan Ave., in Lansing. The event is free. Call 372-4626 for more info.
