THE PRIMARY PRELUDE:
BENAVIDES, BERNERO TEST VOTER SUPPORT
By DANIEL STURM and BERL SCHWARTZ
Virg Bernero says Tony Benavides reminds him of his father. He remembers
the time the two men met – Benavides, a Mexican immigrant, and
Bernero’s dad, an Italian immigrant of about the same age —
in his backyard during a fund-raiser for his race for the state House
of Representatives in 2000.
“My father and Tony really hit it off,” Bernero recalls.
“That’s why for me there’s no personal animosity.”

the commission approved this summer, debated the issue on “City
Pulse on the Air” (7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesdays on WDBM, 88.9-FM)
on July 16. Here is what they had to say:

A
real alternative to Benavides and Bernero
By DANIEL STURM
Melissa Sue Robinson is probably the most unusual candidate in this
mayoral race. Robinson’s name will appear on the Aug. 5 primary
ballot as herself, and for clarity also includes her former identity,
as Charles Edward Staelens Jr.
