BENAVIDES, BERNERO TEST VOTER SUPPORT

Virg Bernero says Tony Benavides reminds him of his father. He remembers the time the two men met – Benavides, a Mexican immigrant, and Bernero’s dad, an Italian immigrant of about the same age — in his backyard during a fund-raiser for his race for the state House of Representatives in 2000.
“My father and Tony really hit it off,” Bernero recalls. “That’s why for me there’s no personal animosity.”

Pro vs. Con: Living Wage
Last week, City Pulse reported that Lansing Mayor Tony Benavides said he will require certain businesses that have contracts with the city to pay employees a “living wage” and that he will work with City Council to pass a living wage ordinance by the end of the year. What are the pluses and minuses of a living wage? William Sepic, president of the Lansing Regional Chamber of Commerce and an opponent of a living wage law, and Ingham County Commissioner Victor Celentino, who chaired the committee that developed the living wage proposal that the commission approved this summer, debated the issue on “City Pulse on the Air” (7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesdays on WDBM, 88.9-FM) on July 16.
