Michigan’s flourishing peace movement
Michigan leads states in local government antiwar resolutions

Last Thursday the Greater Lansing Network Against War in Iraq presented a resolution to Lansing City Council members, asking them to take a stance against the war. If adopted, copies of the resolution would be sent to Washington, calling upon President Bush to place greater emphasis on nonviolent diplomatic efforts to resolve the conflict, to call back forces and to repeal the USA Patriot and the Homeland Security acts, which have been said to threaten rights and liberties guaranteed by the Constitution. Fourth Ward City Council member Harold Leeman commented: “I’m supportive, but you’ve got to have five votes.” The antiwar network plans to campaign for its resolution at City Council’s meeting on Feb. 10.

Grand Rapids rally a catalyst for state peace effort
There was a sunny, clear blue sky when dozens of Lansing peace activists left for a rally in Grand Rapids last Wednesday, Jan. 29. Antiwar protesters are now calling the event a spring awakening for the peace movement, whose regional identity seems to be taking shape two weeks after 500,000 people marched in Washington against President Bush’s planned Iraq invasion.

Protesters seek to train police in non-violence
In order to prevent police brutality in the Feb. 15 statewide rally in Lansing, The Greater Lansing Network Against War in Iraq will try to involve the Lansing and East Lansing police departments in non-violence training workshops. “Many of those police officers are new recruits, and they’ve never experienced this kind of situation,” network coordinator Bob Alexander said.
