There are no barbecues, no Charlie Brown specials, no turkeys in
the oven, no trips to the beach, no fireworks. A lot of people just
ignore it, and others think its an educational, PBS-instigated
drag. Yet if the Founding Fathers were to come back to life and revisit
the sprawling, suburbanized City on the Hill they seeded many years
ago, Martin Luther King Day might be the only holiday observance left
in America they would even remotely recognize.

I would give to be able to invent my own micro-recording device, attach
it to the scarf of a parent, and listen as this scenario unfolds:
A family of three (parent, parent, child) climbs into a giant SUV after
leaving a coffee shop (at which I secretly attached the above-mentioned
recorder to said scarf while standing in line any given Saturday morning
to get a mocha). They are headed to
the mall, or grandmas
house, or somewhere else.
