The Plunder Years of John Engler
Environmental record reminiscent of 19th century Michigan

A story told around the conservation community a few years ago describes the day that a friend of John Engler persuaded the governor to accompany him on a deer-hunting trip into the woods. The friend, so the story goes, reasoned that Engler would better appreciate the value of Michigan’s outdoors if he experienced it firsthand, as over 700,000 firearm deer hunters alone did this fall. But after a short period of sitting tight in the woods, awaiting the passage of a deer, Engler grew noticeably restless. After fidgeting for a while, he cut the trip short.

Council amends Historic District Ordinance

Lansing City Council began the year by reducing the amount of time it allowed at meetings for public comment.
It ended the year by demonstrating that it doesn’t seem to matter how much time citizens have to comment, City Council is not going to listen to them anyway.

Opposition to war with Iraq growing in Lansing

As the Bush administration pushes for war against Iraq and begins to vaccinate emergency workers and soldiers against smallpox, protests continue. In Michigan, the city councils of Ann Arbor and Kalamazoo passed resolutions opposing the war, and in Lansing last Friday a newly formed action group called the Greater Lansing Network Against War in Iraq held its first demonstration for peace.
