Big year-end ratchet twist

“Excess” is the word that first floats to mind when pondering the groaning table of holiday entertainment in front of greater Lansing this year. But who wants to be that cynical? Let us instead choose the neutral term “more.” For all its in-your-face fa-la-la-ing, December is pretty much the same as the rest of the year — just more so. More joy, hope and charity? Maybe. More depression, materialism and falsity? Afraid so. More consumption of durable goods? Better hope so, buddy — your job depends on it.

Is comfort in sight for Old Town?

All parties in Old Town—residents and businesspeople, old and new—agree they want to improve their shared community. Everyone claims to want to stimulate interest in the area, which is the commercial heart of North Lansing, while retaining the historical value of properties as well. And all agree that they don’t want a particular building—the Comfort Station—sold to the highest outside bidder. So far, so good.
