On Death and Dying in Lansing
By
Daniel Sturm
Dr. Aaron Scholnik had been treating a breast cancer patient for several
years. But the woman had reached a point where she was no longer responding
to treatment. The chemotherapy and radiation seemed now to only weaken
her body as the cancer progressed. Scholnik decided to gently lead his
patient to acknowledge the obvious, over the next few appointments.
"I reviewed, with her, her experience with various treatments and
how she initially felt better with each one, but that recently even
once the cancer seemed to shrink a little bit, she didn't feel any better.
With chemotherapy and radiation we'd been trying to take on the cancer
head-first. But the cancer had proven too strong for that approach.
I said, 'Maybe if we can't affect the cancer, we need to just concentrate
on treating you.'"
