When Maria Lapinski-LaFaive moved into her neighborhood on the west side of Lansing, she says she thought her neighbors “were into home improvement projects.” The frequent paint stench on days warm enough for open windows was the reason. Before long, though, she learned she was just one of many inhaling fumes from the General Motors production plant on Verlinden Street. And, like many of her neighbors, Lapinski-LaFaive insisted that GM clean up the odors.
