Energy’s right Thursdays at Espresso Royale

Energy’s right Thursdays at Espresso Royale
For some East Lansing patrons and MSU students, Thursday nights are normally reserved for hopping from bar to bar searching for some alcoholic beverages. Thanks to Espresso Royale Café’s new open mike night, that may change to coffee with a little poetry and music on the side.

Ever since Espresso’s grand re-opening a few weeks ago, the new café has been bustling with activity while giving its larger, corporate competitor down the block a run for its money. In case you didn’t know, Espresso Royale is now located in the old Bagel Fragel building (527 E. Grand River Ave.), and features an all new modern interior, a fireplace, and two IMacs with super-fast Internet connection.

Espresso Royale has always offered an environment for up-and-coming musicians and poets to get their start. On this particular evening, a couple of people read poetry while being accompanied by a keyboard player. Another guy played tunes with his acoustic guitar, and was well-received beyond expectations. Friends perhaps, but either way, the packed house loved him.

I have to be honest. I really wasn’t paying attention at first as I was too busy trying to study. But it was apparent by the number of people filling the café that Espresso Royale may be on to something here. This may be a new venue for music lovers under the age of 21 who are not able to get into those wacky bar nights.

If you need another incentive to show up, Espresso Royale is offering $1 lattes and mochas for a limited time. Take a break from the stale sports-and-suds scene for a change. It beats having someone throw up on your shoes.
