A new jazz score for the timeless clash of Body & Soul

By Lawrence Cosentino
There is a frightening amount of music bottled up inside the foursquare frame of Wycliffe Gordon. Through all the soulful and explosive performances the MSU trombone master has given us in recent years, not once has he been caught lounging suavely on stage while waiting to take a solo. Instead, Wycliffe’s way of “dealing with it” (his favorite phrase) is to stand stiffly and seethe like a big-shouldered volcano, until such time as he is able to vent his blast-furnace imagination into the nearest large tube — trombone, tuba, didgeridoo, or anything else that pushes out an expressive column of air.

Calling up the coolest music people
Is MSU’s Director of American Studies, Stephen Rachman, really on to something with his cleverly pluralized “Music and American Cultures” Festival this week? Or did he just get on his cell phone and call up the coolest music people he could think of, line up the most amazing and diverse range of performances he could cram into this weekend, hire some eggheads to give talks in between, and call it a “cross-disciplinary conference” so that some academics with elbow patches would foot the bill?

Journal shortchanges its readers, Part II
Last week, we ran a story how the Lansing State Journal tried to force its readers to pay for a special section on 9/11 by employing an old, consumer fraud ploy called negative optioning. We praised Journal columnist John Schneider for exposing the Journal’s attempt to charge readers 15 cents for the section if they did not call in to say they didn’t want to pay it. The story quoted a front-page announcement the Journal had made on the two Mondays before the section appeared readers would be charged 15 cents and that the “proceeds” would go to charity.

LCC trustees, gay group differ on Council candidates’ records

Stepping into the Lansing City Council contest, three Lansing Community College board members have sent a letter to Lansing’s gay community commending Brian Jeffries for his record on gay rights. But leaders of Lansing’s gay rights organization dispute their position, saying Jeffries’ opponent, Kathy Pelleran, is the true friend of the gay community.

Real news is DeWeese’s effort to make inroads with minorities
The news coming out of last week’s announcement that eight African-American ministers supported Rep. Paul DeWeese (R-Williamston) for the 23rd Senate District seat over Rep. Virg Bernero (D-Lansing) wasn’t necessarily the endorsement itself. In the grand scheme of things, eight out of Lansing area’s 50 or so African-American ministers isn’t a lot, especially since the odds are that Bernero will ultimately win the support of most (if not all) of the other 42.
