East Lansing land rush endangers more than fireflies

On East Lansing’s southwest side, dusk falls on the Red Cedar River boardwalk half an hour earlier than the rest of the city. The yawning trees create a natural arcade below, blocking out the last rays of day, and a few dozen people have gathered here on this early July evening. Some sit in lawn chairs fanning themselves. Others meander up and down a small stretch of the path, swatting mosquitoes, and waiting for the light show to begin. Kids dart here and there. Finally, after a few random strobes, the performance begins in the foliage on the other side of the river.
