East Lansing land rush endangers more than fireflies
By Allan Ross
On East Lansings southwest side, dusk falls on the Red Cedar River
boardwalk half an hour earlier than the rest of the city. The yawning
trees create a natural arcade below, blocking out the last rays of day,
and a few dozen people have gathered here on this early July evening.
Some sit in lawn chairs fanning themselves. Others meander up and down
a small stretch of the path, swatting mosquitoes, and waiting for the
light show to begin. Kids dart here and there. Finally, after a few
random strobes, the performance begins in the foliage on the other side
of the river.
