Michigan Historical Museum. "What's Cool About Maps?" Through Dec. 2. The exhibit features historical maps of Michigan and the Great Lakes region from the collection of the Jesse Besser Museum in Alpena. "Frontier Metropolis: Images of Early Detroit." An exhibit featuring images and artifacts that focus on the early years of statehood in frontier Michigan. Kresge Art Museum. Rags to Riches: 25 Years of Paper Art from Dieu Donné Papermill. Works by 38 artists who created hand-made paper art at the Dieu Donné Papermill in New York City. Impression 5 Science Center. "Water." Explores the properties of water, featuring water pumps, fountains and locks. "Heartworks," a 3,000 square foot exhibit with a walk-through, interactive heart maze. Also, two new scientific demonstrations, "Throwing Things" and "Why Things Fly." Plus four other permanent exhibitions, including "Chemistry," "Bubbles," "Our Small Planet" and "Spin." Monday-Saturday 10 a.m.-5 p.m. 485-8116.

Michigan Women’s Historical Center and Hall of Fame. Permanent exhibits chronicle the lives of Michigan women by outstanding Michigan women artists and photographers. 213 W. Main St. Wednesday-Friday, noon- 5 p.m., Sunday 2-4 p.m.

MSU Museum. Two exhibits on quilts continue through Dec. 31. "The Michigan Quilt Project: New Discoveries" features representatives of a group of 7,000 quilts inventoried statewide as part of the museum’s efforts to preserve and present the state’s quilting history. "The Mary Schafer Collection: A Legacy of Quilt History" focuses on the work of quilter, historian and educator Mary Schafer of Flushing, Mich. The museum purchased her collection of quilts, books, letters, patterns and other needlework ephemera. "Drinking the Word of God."
